Dawn Marie Payne, age 64, passed away on April 5, 2024, at Twin Rivers Nursing & Rehab Center in Owensboro, KY. She was born on July 8, 1959, in Sturgis, KY, to the late Samuel L. and Frances Mae Yates.
Dawn dedicated much of her life to serving others, working as one of the beloved lunch ladies at Holy Name of Jesus cafeteria. She took pride in her work, nourishing both the bodies and spirits of the students she served.
Outside of work, Dawn found joy in simple pleasures. She had a passion for crossword puzzles, finding solace and satisfaction in unraveling their clues. Reading transported her to different worlds, and she often lost herself in the pages of a good book. Music soothed her soul, and she could often be found humming along to her favorite tunes. Dawn also enjoyed the therapeutic act of coloring, embracing the opportunity to express herself creatively. She loved watching all the Chicago tv programs on Wednesday night. Dawn was an excellent cook and enjoyed making some of her favorites, pot roast and chicken stuffing casserole.
Despite life's challenges, Dawn maintained a resilient spirit and a sense of humor that endeared her to many. Known affectionately as the "gangster granny" at the nursing home.
Dawn is survived by her companion, Glen Hayes; her devoted daughters, Jennifer McFarland (Christopher) of Clarksville, TN, and Amanda Payne (David Harris) of Henderson; her cherished grandchildren, Isaac McFarland and Daijah Payne of Clarksville, TN, and Jacob Harris and Daniel Harris of Henderson; her sisters, Nancy, Victoria, and Elizabeth; her brother, Jeff; and several nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate Dawn's life will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to gather and honor her memory.
Dawn's legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
