Doris Grace Caton, age 93, of Henderson, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville, Indiana, after a short illness. She was an amazing Christian lady who lived for Christ everyday of her life. Her special talent was memorization and recitations of many Bible verses, whole chapters, and many poems. She loved teaching and was an English teacher at Memorial Junior High School, Orlando, Florida, for many years. She was also a substitute teacher for Henderson County schools. She taught a family grandfather how to read so he could read his Bible. She worked for many years handling the accounting at the family business, Caton’s TV, Sales and Service. She was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on February 1, 1931, and grew up in Sanford, Florida. She was a graduate of Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida,in 1949, the Baptist Bible Institute in Lakeland, Florida in 1952. She received her AA degree at Seminole Junior College, Sanford, Florida, her BA degree at the University of Central Florida, and her MA degree at the University of Evansville, Indiana, in 1991.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Annie Belle and Hiram W. Shannon, Sr.; her brothers, Fred, Watson, David, H.W. Jr. and Leonard Shannon; her sisters, Sophia Ponsell, Lois O’Barr, Joan Brown, Autumn Shannon, Elizabeth Turlington and Ann Smiley; and her first husband, William A. Blalock. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 37 years Tommie D. Caton of Henderson; daughter, Marilyn A. Plummer; her stepdaughter, Joyce Carmen; her grandchildren, Benjamin Ogg, Stephen Chesser, and Christopher Chesser.
She is survived by her sister, Gwen S. Spivey, of Sanford, Florida; her daughter, Angela Chesser and husband, Marc, of Orlando, Florida; her son, Gordon W. Blalock, of Rohrersville, Maryland; her grandchildren, Meredith Howie and her husband, Derrick, of Kevil; Hannah Ellis of South Charleston, West Virginia; two step grandchildren, Janet Stone and her husband, Arthur, of Henderson; Jenny Hawkins and her partner, Mark Haffner, of Henderson; her great grandchildren, Kai Bubenik of Kevil; Landon Howie of Kevil; Charlotte Chesser and her mother, Kira Chesser, of Winter Park, Florida; Oliver Chesser and his mother, Stacy Homola, of Kissimmee, Florida; and Samuel Ellis, South Charleston, West Virginia; her step great grandchildren Amanda Broshears and her husband, John, of Henderson; and Emma Brooks and her husband, Jimmy, of Tupelo, Mississippi; and other loving family members.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 29, at Tomblinson Funeral Home, 325 1st Street, Henderson, Kentucky from 1:00-2:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm following the visitation. Brother Allen Butler, Victory Baptist Church, will officiate at the service.
