Dorothy Mae Hillyard, affectionately known as "Granny Dot," passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on January 15, 2025, at the age of 91 at St. Anthony’s Lucy Smith King Center. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Dorothy lived a life full of love, laughter, and service to those around her.
She was born on July 21, 1933, in Beech Grove, KY to the late Andrew (Monkey grip) and Beatrice Bingemer.. She was a member of Cairo Methodist Church.
Dorothy was married to the love of her life, Budie Hillyard, for nearly 66 wonderful years. Together, they built a home filled with love, joy, and countless memories. Their marriage was a testament to the power of commitment and devotion, a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
Granny Dot was known for her incredible cooking. She delighted in preparing delicious meals, but it was her milkshakes, lovingly made for her grandchildren, that she was known for making. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her loved ones, sharing stories, laughter, and the comfort of her home.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Delories Mullens and Linda Bingemer; three brothers, Charles Bingemer, Garland Bingemer and Kenneth Bingemer.
She is survived by her loving husband, Budie Hillyard of Cairo, four children, Gary Lloyd Hillyard (Joy) of Little Dixie, Debbie Goldsberry (the late Johnny Goldsberry) of Robards, Dorrel Wayne Hillyard (Shellie) of Little Dixie and Phillip Ray Hillyard (Shantay) of Cairo; one sister, Alice Eblen of Jackson, TN; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Cairo Methodist Church, with a service beginning at 12:00 PM. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time at the church with Rev. Michele Nally officiating.
