Elmore “Elmo” Jewell, of Henderson, Kentucky, was born on September 28, 1925, and passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025, at the Lucy Smith King Care Center in Henderson, Kentucky, at the remarkable age of 100.
Elmo was a proud United States Navy veteran who served honorably during World War II aboard the USS Auburn (AGC-10). Following his military service, he worked for many years as a skilled operating engineer and proudly retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 181. He wore both hats proudly.
A mechanic and lifelong problem-solver, Elmo was known for his sharp mind, ability to fix, build, or explain just about anything. He owned and operated Vacuum Sales and Service, later selling the business to his grandson Chris. Retirement never truly suited him, and he continued working alongside him for more than 25 years. Elmo also built his own family home in Happy Acres, where he formed lasting friendships with neighbors and loved spending his time outside.
Elmo was known for being a talker, though many also remember his head nods, hearty laugh, and warm smiles—sometimes because he was hard of hearing, and sometimes because he already knew what was going to be said. He loved good food and never hesitated to offer an honest opinion about a meal. He enjoyed many mornings of his life sharing breakfast and conversation with buddies at Hardee’s and was rarely without a Pepsi. Stubborn at times and determined, Elmo did things his own way, never met a stranger, and always had something to say. Above all else, Elmo loved his wife of 75 years, Mildred “Sissy” Jewell, and spent his life watching out for her.
Known lovingly as “Pa” to his family, Elmo is survived by his beloved wife, Mildred “Sissy” Jewell, his daughter, Connie Jewell of Ord, Nebraska; and his grandchildren, Chris Gish (Lisa), Jennifer Gish, Carrie Bolin (Clay), and Kim Edghill (John). He is also survived by several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and other cherished family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Luella Jewell; daughters, Carolyn Gooch and Beverly Houghton; and his brothers, Bill and David Jewell.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2026 at Tomblinson Funeral Home in Henderson with Bro. David Mabrey officiating.
Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by American Legion Worsham Post #40 Military Funeral Detail and Honor Guard.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday, January 2 from 10 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be his great-grandsons, Tanyon Gish, Tylor Hayes, Trevor Hayes, Logan Bolin, Jaxon Edghill, and Koebin Edghill.
Honorary Pallbearers will be great-granddaughters, Blake (Gish) Turnage and Mikaela (Gish) Ledbetter.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of the Lucy Smith King Care Center for the kindness, dignity, and exceptional care shown to Elmo during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Elmo’s memory in appreciation for the care and compassion provided.
Elmore “Elmo” Jewell will be remembered for his sharp mind, strong work ethic, honest words, and big heart. He believed in hard work, good food, checking in on others, and doing things his way. His stories, his nods, and his smile will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on for generations.
