Elsie Herron Couch

Elsie Herron Couch, 87, Slaughters, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at her daughter’s home in Cecilia, Kentucky. She was born December 29, 1925, to Cranson Herron and Jimmie Brooks Herron. She was raised in Slaughters, graduating high school in 1943. She professed faith in Jesus during a revival service at Slaughters Baptist Church and later became a member of Zion Brick Church and was baptized in the Slaughters Lake. In March 1944, she married Frank Joe Couch. They had two daughters, Brenda Couch Lowe in 1947; and Bonnie Couch Rupsch in 1950. She was blessed with one granddaughter, Bethany Lowe McGuffin and three grandsons, Stephen Lowe, Davy Rupsch, and Joey Rupsch. She has two great-granddaughters, Megan and Madison McGuffin, and two great-grandsons, Ty McGuffin and Donovan Rupsch. After World War II, Frank and Elsie lived in Evansville and were members of Walnut Street Baptist Church and then Forest Hills Baptist Church. She served as Fellowship Chairman and on the Flower and Visitation Committees. After she retired, they moved back to Slaughters and re-joined Slaughters Baptist Church where she served on the Lord’s Supper and Flower Committees. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at Sunbeam during the war and part-time at Sears. She worked for 17 years for the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation, and most of these years were at Reitz High School where she served as the Food Service Manager. After being retired for several years, she worked for the Webster County School System as a school bus monitor until her health began to slow her down. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Frank Joe Couch, in 1996; and also by her mother and father, Jimmie Brooks Herron and Cranson (C.M.) Herron; one brother, Norman Herron; one sister, Vada Herron Raines; one grandson, Jon C. Lewis; and one brother-in-law, Harold Raines. Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Lowe (husband Greg) of Cecilia, Kentucky, and Bonnie Rupsch (husband Dave) of Henderson; one sister, Rita Herron Duncan (husband Wallace) of Slaughters; one granddaughter, Bethany Lowe McGuffin of Cecilia; three grandsons, Stephen Lowe of Panama City, FL; Davy Rupsch of Bowling Green, KY; and Joey Rupsch of Houston, TX; two great-granddaughters, Megan and Madison McGuffin; two great-grandsons, Donovan Rupsch and Ty McGuffin; three nephews, Kenny Ranes, Keith Ranes, and Matt Duncan; four nieces, Cindy Duncan Goff, Lisa Duncan Jackson, Betty Garlington Christy and Mary Garlington Trefry; and several great-nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 21st at Tomblinson Funeral Home Slaughters-Hanson Chapel, with Bro. Brad Rogers and Bro. Andrew officiating. Visitation will be Friday, December 20th from 2:00 to 7:00 at the funeral home and on Saturday at 11:00 until service time. Pallbearers will be Greg Lowe, Dave Rupsch, Davy Rupsch, Joey Rupsch, Stephen Lowe, Mike McGuffin, Kenny Ranes, Keith Ranes, and Matt Duncan. Memorial contributions may be made to Slaughters Baptist Church.
