Frances Lucille "Granny" Fridy

September 13, 1930 — April 11, 2023

Frances Lucille “Granny” (Ray) Fridy, 92, of Ashbyburg, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at her home under the care of St. Anthony’s Hospice.

She was born on September 13, 1930 in Ashbyburg, Kentucky where she continued to live her entire life and was often referred to as “Mayor”. On August 14, 1965 she married her husband Roger Miller Fridy and they spent 53 years together.

Granny was a homemaker for most of her life. She attended Jewell City Holiness Church where she served as treasurer for many years. She enjoyed raising a big garden every summer, caring for her flowers, and doing her yardwork. Granny loved watching her Westerns, especially those with John Wayne. She was the first female school bus driver in Hopkins County and, if you knew how she typically drove, you could understand why kids made it home much earlier than usual.

She loved to travel; she and Papaw traveled all over the country, from family vacations when the kids were young to attending antique tractor shows with the grandkids. Granny took her first flight at the age of 85 on a trip to Key West with her family but was convinced they had taken her to a different country. Although she loved to travel, her favorite place to be was on her back porch with her family, and her favorite thing to do was eat!

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents Marvin “Coon” Ray and Rhona Bell (Spears) Ray Robards; one daughter Abby Ellis; one brother, Jimmy Ray; two sisters, Joyce Hancock and Susan Jacobs.

Survivors include three daughters, Debbie Wilson of Onton, Phyllis Hodges of Ashbyburg, and Robyn Tomblinson (Tom Forshee) of Louisville; son-in-law, Chip Tomblinson of Slaughters; two sisters, Jean Winstead and Catharine Railey, both of Madisonville; three grandchildren, Odie Hodges (Alysia) of Calhoun, Leah Tomblinson (Sam Johnston) of Slaughters, and Alex Tomblinson of Slaughters; four great-grandchildren, Wayne Hodges, Taylor Moyes (Heath), Stella Johnston, and Maverick Johnston; two great-great-grandchildren, Oliver and Thea Moyes.

Services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Tomblinson Funeral Home Sebree Chapel with Bro. Dennis Mayfield officiating. Burial will follow in Onton Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday 4-7PM and Tuesday 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Odie Hodges, Alex Tomblinson, Wayne Hodges, Sam Johnston, Chip Tomblinson and Cory Lindsey.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Anthony’s Hospice.

The family would like to recognize three amazing women who provided excellent care to Granny that made it possible to keep her in her home of 62 years, Jan Ipock, Rose Tolbert and Jeanne Tucker Brown.
