Garland Rice Traylor

February 21, 1932 — December 25, 2016

Our beloved entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on December 25, 2016. Garland, 84, born in Providence, KY was preceded in death on November 18, 2013 by his wife of 58 years Judith Ann (Ogilby) Traylor, parents Garland Guy and Mary Magdalene "Maggie" (Childress), a brother Cleophas who died in childhood, sister Lois Edine Townsend and an infant who died en utero. Garland leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Leann (Gerald) Scott; son Steven Wayne; 3 grandchildren Matthew (Andrea) Scott, Rachel Simms and Ashley Traylor; 3 great grandchildren Wyatt and Lucas Simms, Elaina Scott; sister Irene Herron, Louisville; nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends Bonnie and Drucilla, his second family at Colonial Assisted Living and myriad dear friends. Garland served his country in the US Army as a MP during the Korean Conflict stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. After an industrial accident that crushed the fingers on his right hand, he and Judy moved to Henderson where he began selling life insurance for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. After that 30 year career, he began selling real estate working for Coldwell Banker, Herron Auction & Realty and Collier & Co. Century 21. After that career he worked part time hanging lock boxes for Henderson Audubon Area Board of Realtors. Garland served his church and community his entire adult life in many ways, some known and many unknown. Ordained a deacon in 1974 at Immanuel Baptist Temple, he finished as a Deacon Emeritus at Hyland Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School for 50 years, chaperoned youth events and taught neighborhood kids to plant flowers. He led prayer and devotions at Colonial Assisted Living as well as planting and maintaining their flowers. Over the years he picked up many a stranger on the road giving them a ride, a hot meal, $20 in their pocket and a Bible if they wanted it. On his daily walk through Atkinson Park he picked up aluminum cans, golf balls, baseballs and softballs – turning them into his annual Goodfellows donation as "Atkinson P. Bagman". Garland always paid his tithe weekly; he supported Henderson Christian Community Outreach and Gideons International monthly and he gave annually to over 30+ charities. Garland was honored several times over the years with a vacation by making MetLife's Honor Club; in 1996 he was awarded Realtor of the Year; in 2001 he sold over $2 million of real estate at Coldwell Banker and in 2005 he was awarded the Senator Paul Herron Service Award by the Henderson Audubon Area Board of Realtors. Dad never took much time for himself but he loved to fish, grill a good steak, try new restaurants and cuisines, travel and go antiquing. He was a generous, kind, gentle soul who loved beyond measure. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be Thursday December 29, 2016 at 1:00PM at Tomblinson Funeral Home in Henderson with Pastor Kenny Kidd officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday 4:00-8:00 at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy can be made in the form of contributions to Hyland Baptist Church and Gideons International.
