J.Z. "Junebug" Shelton, Jr.

August 10, 1920 — October 4, 1944

It is with both a heavy heart and deep reverence that we announce the coming home of Staff Sgt. Junior J. Shelton, who bravely served his country until his untimely death on October 4, 1944, in the vicinity of Hatterath, Germany. Known to family and friends as "Junior," he was born J.Z. Shelton, Jr. on August 10, 1920, and his journey through life was marked by a spirit of determination and an unwavering commitment to duty.

Junior entered military service on April 7, 1939, serving with valor at multiple posts across the United States, including Fort Benjamin Harrison and Fort Custer, before ultimately joining the 115th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Division. From the inception of World War II, Junior's dedication was palpable; he attained the rank of Sergeant and earned numerous honors, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart with oak leaf clusters for his bravery.

Despite being declared Missing in Action until 1950, Junior's legacy remained etched in the hearts of his family and fellow servicemen. It wasn't until 1950 that the Army confirmed his status as Killed in Action, a solemn conclusion that underscored the profound sacrifices made by those who wear the uniform. He fought alongside his comrades during a fierce battle that marked a critical moment in history, a testament to his courage and commitment.

Junior leaves behind a cherished family, including his niece Vonette J. Shelton-Curtis, nephew O.J. Eastwood, and daughter Mary Frances Wagon, accompanied by three beloved grandchildren, Mary "Mimi" Ellen Hill Green, George Tyus Hill, Jr., and others who will carry his memory forward. He is reunited in spirit with his late siblings and a granddaughter, bringing a sense of peace after so many years of waiting for closure.

In celebration of his life and sacrifice, graveside services will be held on October 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Springdale Cemetery in Sebree, where Dr. Daniel S. Lovell will officiate. The profound ceremony will include military honors, a fitting tribute to a soldier whose dedication to his country demanded the ultimate price.

Prior to the ceremony, family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM at the Tomblinson Funeral Home Sebree Chapel. This time of togetherness will be an opportunity to reflect on Junior's life, share stories, and celebrate the profound impact he made on so many.

As we prepare to gather in remembrance of Junior, let us honor the spirit of "No One Left Behind," embracing the values of courage, sacrifice, and love that he embodied throughout his extraordinary life.
