Larry Thomas Bourland, 80, passed away on January 24, 2025, surrounded by family, due to complications from his long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Larry was born on December 29th, 1944, in Henderson, KY to Charles and Alma (Majors) Bourland. He graduated from Henderson County High School before joining the U.S. Army.
Larry served his country from June 1968 through June 1969 with honor and distinction. He was a member of F Company, 52nd Infantry Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP), later I Company, 75th Infantry Rangers. The U.S. Army recognized Larry for his honorable service by awarding him the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Air, National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign Medals, in addition to Combat Infantryman and Parachutist Badges. After he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, he returned to his hometown of Henderson, KY.
After returning home from the war, Larry met and married the love of his life, Cynthia Vance on August 8, 1970. Together they had three daughters, Brigitte Bourland, Desirae (Bourland) Becker, and Kristin Bourland, who were his pride and joy. Larry was a courageous, generous, and kindhearted soul with an indomitable spirit. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband and father. Larry was an avid collector of firearms, pocket knives, coins, stamps, and assorted items. A retired carpenter, he loved to tinker with and trade his treasured finds. Larry enjoyed spending his mornings conversing with friends and neighbors at local coffee shops. Above all, he cherished family gatherings and time spent with loved ones.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Douglas Bourland. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; their daughters Brigitte, Desirae, and Kristin; his grandchildren, Chase Becker and Emma Becker; as well as his sister, Shirley (Bourland) Schuessler and his brother, Jerry Bourland.
His family has organized a graveside memorial service to honor Larry’s life and military service, which will be held at Fairmont Cemetery at the Mausoleum Chapel on January 28th, 2025, at 12:30 P.M. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Worsham Post 40.
