Mary Sue Spainhoward, 70, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. Born and raised in Henderson, Kentucky, Mary spent most of her life in the area and was known for her warm heart, vibrant spirit, and zest for life.
Mary had a passion for cooking and shared her culinary talents during her years as a cook at the 76 Truck Stop. She later worked at Tyson Foods for six years before retiring. In her retirement, Mary delighted in simple joys: solving word search puzzles, creating art in adult coloring books, and passionately debating her belief that the Pittsburgh Steelers were the best football team.
Mary was beloved for her spunky personality, sass, and a smile and laugh that could light up any room. Over the past year, she resided at Redbanks Rehabilitation Center, where she was grateful for the compassionate care of the staff, particularly the “young guys” who treated her with love and respect. She later moved to Redbanks Regency Apartments, where she found a second family in her close-knit community of friends.
Mary is survived by her “girls,” Sharon Risk and her wife Angela Risk, and her two adored grandchildren, Mackenzie Risk and Caleb Risk, who were the light of her life. She is also survived by her brothers: Tony (Barb), Jerry (Lisa), Paul (Lealda), sister in law Carolyn Spainhoward and Roy (Angela), lovingly referred to as the “Spainhoward Clan.” Mary also held a deep affection for her many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francile and John B. Spainhoward, and four brothers: Johnny, Terry, Donald (“Spanky”), and Steve Spainhoward.
Mary’s loving, vibrant spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday December 30, 2024, at Tomblinson Funeral Home, with burial at a later date in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will take place from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home.
