Melvin Leo Berrong

Melvin Leo Berrong, Cairo, passed away Sunday August 10, 2014 at 3:37 PM at Deaconess Gateway in Newburgh. Leo was born in Hopkins County on April 5, 1924 to Lloyd and Bennie Berrong. He was a retired coal miner with Island Creek Coal Ohio 11 Mine in Union County and a proud member of the UMWA. Leo enjoyed family, camping, fishing and gardening and was especially proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Dorris “Dot” Berrong, son Darrell Lee Berrong, 2 sisters Pearl Crowley and Agnes McCormick, 4 brothers J.W. Berrong, Everett Berrong, Charles Berrong and Harry Berrong. Survivors include his son Duane Berrong and wife Jane of Cairo Daughter Marilyn Schwallier and husband Steve of Henderson 3 Sisters: Lucille Williams of Holland, Michigan Geraldine Dozeman and husband Ken of Holland, Michigan Beulah Hayes and husband Jim of Slaughters 8 Grandchildren: Misty Herren, Amy Bassett, Sandy Schwallier, Kevin Schwallier, Chris Berrong, Carrie Burnette, Jason Berrong and Stephanie Berrong 15 Great-grandchildren: Olivia, Ava, Maya, Ben, Treigon, Aliyah, Isaiah, Kassius, Kandace, Myles, Bella, Dillon, Casey, Lilly and Brady Nieces and Nephews Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday August 13, 2014 at Tomblinson Funeral Home Henderson Chapel. Pastor Randy Durham will officiate. Entombment will be in Fairmont Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Anthony’s Hospice. Pallbearers will be Larry Berrong, John Berrong, Ray Berrong, Tom Richey, Jerry Buchanan and Zach Womack.
