Donald Ray "Pee Wee" Gaines, 77, of Henderson, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Deaconess Henderson Hospital.
Born on June 27, 1949, in Henderson, Kentucky, Donald was the son of the late Jesse and Catherine (Summers) Gaines. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked as a mechanic at Henderson Country Club and later at Advance Auto Parts.
Known affectionately to many as "Pee Wee," was a proud member of American Legion Worsham Post #40 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also honored as a Kentucky Colonel. A devoted University of Kentucky basketball fan, Pee Wee enjoyed cheering on the Wildcats every chance he had. He loved playing golf with his son and treasured helping his grandson develop his own love for the game. Pee Wee also enjoyed NASCAR, fishing, and, above all else, spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his unwavering love for those closest to him, his service to his country, and the many friendships he built throughout his life.
In addition to his parents, Pee Wee was preceded in death by his son, J.R. Gaines; two sisters, Patricia Ann Walker and Cathy Lou Dooley; and two brothers, Ronald “Roscoe” Lee Gaines and Michael Wayne Gaines.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Patty Gaines; one brother, Richard Allan Gaines (Charlene); and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends who will cherish his memory.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2026, with the Rev. David Daughtery and Chad Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmont Cemetery, where the American Legion Worsham Post #40 Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Josh Daughtery, Mikey Critser, Chad Walker, Travis Walker, Martin Walker, and Corey Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Worsham Post #40 Burial Detail.
