Shirley J. Young

Shirley Jean (Brown) Young, 88, of Henderson, Kentucky, peacefully passed away on March 7, 2026, at Redbanks Skilled Nursing Facility under the care of St. Anthony's Hospice. Born on November 20, 1937, in Evansville, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Verbal A. Brown.

A devoted member of both Zion Baptist Church and, previously, Advanced Baptist Church. She was known for her vibrant spirit and her enjoyment of life's simple pleasures. Shirley was a passionate fan of UK basketball, eagerly anticipating each game, and cherished the moments spent at Sunday School socials. Her kitchen was a gathering place for family and friends, where the aroma of her famous fried chicken and chicken and dumplings would draw loved ones near.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Gene Young; brother, Marvin Brown; sister, Louise Pinkston and her husband Gene; son-in-law, Forest Turner, Jr.

She is survived by her two daughters, Julie Armstrong (Chuck) and Luann Martin (Steve), as well as her brother, Michael Brown (Pattie). Her legacy continues through her seven beloved grandchildren: John Turner, Sarah Turner (Cordaro), Luke Turner (Alyssa), David Armstrong, Andrew Martin (Matt), Zach Martin, and Elizabeth Martin Lee (Kody), and her six great-grandchildren: Ben Jenkins, Ansel Jenkins, Maisie Jenkins, Meadow Martin, Scarlett Lee, and Deacon Lee. She also leaves behind cherished nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her warmth and kindness.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Tomblinson Funeral Home Henderson Chapel with Pastor Matt Pinkston officiating. Burial will be in Baskett Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 10:30 AM until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Anthony's Hospice or Zion Baptist Church.
