Sylvia Lou Slaughter, age 81 of Henderson, Ky, renowned writer for The Gleaner, Sunday Evansville Courier and Press, and The Tennessean passed away March 31, 2022, surrounded by her beloved family and friends. Our cherished sister, aunt, cousin, and friend was preceded in death by her parents, Clinton Mulford Slaughter and Martha Lucille Slaughter. Sylvia graduated from Henderson City High and went on to further her education by attending the University of Kentucky Northwest Center which is now Henderson Community College. She also attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. She started her writing career as proofreader at The Gleaner, then moved on to the Sunday Courier and Press where she was given the opportunity to have her own column. She used her vivid imagination to write stories about her family, interview celebrities, and entertain all that picked up the Sunday paper. After her time at the Sunday Courier and Press, she moved to Nashville to write for the Tennessean as the Lifestyle Editor. Her passion for writing won her multiple awards. Anyone who read her column knew how much she loved her family. Her first love may have been the written word, but her family was never far behind. As the eldest sister, she taught her seven younger siblings and countless nieces and nephews how to tie their shoes and count to ten in Latin. Sylvia or as those closest knew her, Sy-Sy, was a free spirit that opened her home and heart to all. She will be missed by all that knew her; however, the memories of what she has given us will live on forever. She was one of a kind that charmed the world with her intelligence, beauty, and grace. To know her was to love her.
