Wilbur J. Coomes, 81, of Owensboro, Kentucky died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Hopkins County on January 19, 1931 to the late Walter and Wesley Blue Coomes. He was retired from Texas Gas as a Supervisor of Gas Control. He enjoyed bird hunting, deer hunting and was a very good cook. He was a fan of UK basketball and Atlanta Braves Baseball. Wilbur loved spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Edward Lynn Coomes in 1959. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Wilma Higdon Coomes; children, Suzanne Coomes Payne of Owensboro and Bruce A. Coomes of Duluth, GA; grandchildren Kerri Anne Nelson of Bowling Green and Eric Lucas Payne of Madisonville; siblings, Reva Halloman (Jon) of Hanson, George Thomas Coomes (Dora) of Providence, Jimmy Ray Coomes of Slaughters, Kay Coomes Fuqua (Buddy Ray) of Philpot, and Glenda Jane (Mike) Townsend of Slaughters. Services are 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at the Chapel of Tomblinson Funeral Home Slaughters-Hanson Chapel in Slaughters, KY. Dr. David Blair will officiate. Visitation is from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro and on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Tomblinson Funeral Home Slaughters-Hanson Chapel. Burial will follow in Slaughters Cemetery with full military honors by the Hopkins County Honor Guard.
